My first weekend in Denmark has been great. I am trying to embrace being a local, and part of that is embracing the thousands of years of history I am surrounded by. Today I went to tour the Rosenborg Palace. I can not remember a time or a museum that I have been so close to the artifacts. The original armory now houses the Crown Jewels and other impressive pieces. The jewels, art, and figures were so beautiful and so intricate, it amazes me that people were able to create them by hand in the 1600s.
Thinking back on my last few posts, I know I have been using the words “beautiful” “amazing” and other simple descriptive words to explain to Copenhagen through a simple blog. If I had the ability to upload pictures through my iPad onto the blog, I would, but it just isn’t feasible. Once I am home, I will put together an album with all my pictures and descriptions, and you will realize how fitting the words “beautiful” and “amazing” really are for this city.
Ok, back to the palace. Wandering through the palace, walking on original flooring, being so close I could touch wall tapestries, and wandering through the grounds that was one the yard of the royals was a phenomenon I have never had before. I have seen natural beauty in the United States, and man made beauty across the country, but this was different. Wandering through this palace, I could have taken one thousand pictures of every single nook and cranny in that place. My phone’s capacity appreciated the fact that I only took 100. If ever you have a chance to visit Copenhagen, visit the Rosenborg, it’s worth it.
After visiting the palace, I spent a beautiful afternoon sitting in a garden cafe, soaking up the beautiful 66 degree weather that is Copenhagen. And then went on a typical barbecue in the park.
My RA planned a group outing and we trekked out to a park to dine like the Danes. The eat their hot dogs very strangely. The links are a foot, but the buns are only 6 inches. The dip the hot dog in ketchup, take a bit, dip the bun in the ketchup, take a bite, and repeat. The bun and dog never touch each other haha. To continue the evening of traditional Danish adventures, I got caught in the rain on the way back! It would have been a bit more enjoyable if it had been a little warmer…. but when in Rome…or Copenhagen that is. I will now be carrying my umbrella with me at all times, just to be prepared for whatever weather Copenhagen throws at me.
To wrap up the evening, I began to plan my other adventures for this month. The world is a big place and I want to see as much of it as I can while I’m here! Cross your fingers that the rain lets up tomorrow.
