It was my first full Monday in Copenhagen. It was filled with class and studying. When I signed up for this program, I knew that it would be a four credit course in four weeks, which is a little intense. This week it began to catch up to me, our first exam is tomorrow.
It is amazing to think of how much I have learned about the Vikings so far. I knew that the mainstream viking culture didn’t portray them correctly, but there is so much more to them then we thought. They weren’t just pillagers, they were farmers. They cared about their families. They were storytellers. They had a full government system. They even played board games! They cared about their history. And they had a lot of it.
My afternoon was spent studying and reviewing, and truly appreciating the 16 week long courses that I’m used to. I wish that I could have more time with this subject. We are learning a lot very quickly, but it would be nice to spend more time focusing on the details. Their mythology and day to day activities are just so interesting. I could take classes (plural) on them and still want more.
For my break in Copenhagen today, I went on a lovely walk through the Botanical Gardens. They are just a few blocks away from my apartment and they are gorgeous! It is incredible how many different types of plants they can keep alive and well in this Northern European country. There was an entire display of cacti, and it gets quite cold here in the winter. It was very impressive. I’m sure that it can’t get more beautiful there than it was today. I even got caught in a light summer rain, which made the lake on the grounds even prettier. Prepare yourself for some great pictures come August!
Now back to the books to prepare for tomorrow! Wish me luck!
