Today was a pretty fantastic day. It was the beginning of weekend number two on this European adventure, and it exceeded all of my expectations. This morning a few of us got up bright and early and headed out to the train station to spend the day in Malmo Sweden. It is a beautiful little town in Southern Sweden and is just a half hour train ride out of Copenhagen.
It was a packed day to say the least. The town has very historic roots, and so many beautiful sites to see. We started off by stopping in at St. Peter’s Church. It is over 700 years old, and is the oldest and grandest church in the city. It took us a few tries to actually get in though. In the morning there was a baptism, and in the afternoon there was a wedding. Third time’s the charm, and the wait was worth it. St. Peter’s is one of the most beautiful and ornate churches I have seen in a long time.
Our next stop was the Form Design Center. It was a very interesting modern art museum. There were lots of displays of found art and clothing made from untraditional sources, like a jacket out of paper. They wouldn’t be very effective pieces of clothing, but they were very interesting to look at.
Next we stopped at Ebba’s House. Ebba’s House is the smallest museum in all of Sweden. It is a tiny little house that has been perfectly preserved from the 1910s. In the 1960s when the neighborhood was going through significant remodeling, Ebba, the home owner, refused to sell her home, and instead donated it, as it was complete with all of her belongings, to the Malmo Museer for its continued protection and history. It was fantastic. I didn’t know what to expect when going there, but it was a great representation of life that we wouldn’t have been able to see in many other places!
After Ebba’s came lunch. Bullen has been said to have the best Swedish meatballs in Malmo, and I think they were correct. It was a great plate filled with flavor. I couldn’t have asked for anything better to eat in Sweden!
The day finished up with some shopping and time in the Kungsparken. It was a beautiful day, so all of the Swedes were out enjoying the sun.
We definitely saw a lot in just one short day in Malmo. Two countries down, one to go. I suppose I may have gone to three countries today. Once back in Denmark, my house mates and I all went to The Australian Bar. It is located under the library of my study program here in Denmark. It was interesting and loud and full of young Danes. A good time was had by all, but drinking in Denmark is nothing if not expensive.
The second Saturday was better than I could have asked for, and I had an amazing time traveling. Two more days and I get to hop on a plane for the next leg of my adventure! I can hardly wait!
