I can’t believe it’s already Wednesday! I only have one more day of class in the classroom. My paper is done and ready to be handed in, and everything is beginning to wrap up. My housemates are beginning to pack and say their goodbyes, but we still have 2 days! I’m not done with Copenhagen yet!
This afternoon I went to tour my third Denmark palace, Christiansborg. This was the original palace that the monarchy lived in. Today it houses a museum and parliament. I think I would rank it second behind Rosenborg in terms of my favorite.
I was able to tour the stables, which still hold horses in the winter months that they royal family uses. They are empty in July, but they still smell like stables to me…
Then I went over to the Royal Reception Rooms. They are breathtaking. Everything in them is original, from the books on the shelves, to the seats, to the wall art, to the floor. They care a lot about the floor in Rosenborg. To be able to tour the area, you had to wear shoe covers. Smart, but silly looking haha. The rooms were exquisite, filled with chandeliers and beauty. I think the royal family still uses them occasionally for important events. What I would give to go to a party there.
Next was the royal ruins. The current Rosenborg is not the first structure that was in this location. It’s predecessor had a bad fire, and there were some church buildings there before that. Under the castle are foundation remains from some of these old buildings. I was blown away to think of how much history was actually there. That the bricks I was looking at were hundreds of years old. It also frightened me a bit because it was dark and dank down there, and I got a bit turned around. I spent about 10 minutes wandering aimlessly looking for the exit.
My favorite part of the tour was definitely the Royal Reception Rooms, but it was followed closely by going up to the top of the tower. I had a 360 degree view of the city. I could practically see my apartment, kind of. I could see the area of the city where I live at least. It was a bit of an overcast day, so the view could have been better, but it was still fantastic.
I finished my paper in the afternoon, and now all that’s left to do is spend every moment I can spending time with the great friends I have made on this trip. We will be going out somewhere tonight, I’m sure we will have a blast! We are even in the process of planning cross-country visits. If only we all lived in the Midwest…
