Today was my last full day in Copenhagen, and I am in complete and utter denial. Twenty seven days have gone too quickly, and it was easily one of the best months of my life.
Today our class officially ended in the best way possible. There was no final, we got to sail Viking ships today!!! It was a great day! We went out to Roskilde, Denmark and spent the morning at the Viking Ship Museum. The ships were authentic re-creations of actual Viking ships. We rowed out and sailed around for two hours, it was a blast! There were a few people in my ship that were completely incompetent when it came to sailing or rowing, but we made it through without them. I haven’t been out on the water a lot this summer, so it was just what I needed to have a relaxing last day. The fact that the Vikings were able to sail these ships across the world and be so successful with them: raiding, moving, etc, is so impressive to me. I wish this class was longer than a month. I have learned a lot, but there is so much more that we could have covered.
We spent some time wandering around the museum and saw some true Viking ships that have been excavated from around Denmark. They were huge and impressive, and it is hard for me to believe that men were able to build such large vessels with such simple tools.
The rest of the afternoon was spent playing Tetris with all of my belongings, and the game board was my suitcases. I think I have everything set, and I am definitely underweight for my checked bag. So that’s done, but it was not a happy afternoon. Packing means going home and I don’t want to leave this place.
I had a going away dinner of a duck sandwich, and it was perfection. A great last meal for my last full day. To wrap up the month, we had a champagne toast to celebrate new friendships, new adventures, and the fastest month any of us had experienced. We had a great night out wandering the town and making a few last memories. Saying goodbye to all of the people I have been living with was hard. I can’t wrap my head around the fact that tomorrow I won’t be able to walk down the hall and find someone to tour a castle with me or enjoy the chaos of living with twenty other people. There are some people here that I will miss more than others, and as I sit here eating chicken nuggets at 2:30 in the morning with my 4 best friends on this trip, I can’t help but be sad about my flight home tomorrow.
This will probably be my last post from Denmark, but not my last post for this blog. Once I get back to America I will be posting up a link to see all of my pictures. I’m not even gone, and I miss this place already!
